NWGB Calls for Tech-Driven Regulation to Combat Illegal Gambling

SOUTH AFRICA– The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has called for gambling regulation to evolve alongside technological advancements as the industry faces growing challenges linked to digital platforms, illegal betting activities, and consumer protection.

Chief Executive Boitumelo Qalinge said regulators must adapt to emerging technologies and changing consumer behavior to ensure the gambling sector remains safe, fair, transparent, and accountable.

According to Qalinge, modern regulatory frameworks should support innovation while addressing risks associated with illegal gambling, underage participation, and online fraud. He emphasized that regulators cannot rely solely on traditional rules that may no longer reflect the realities of an increasingly digital gambling environment.

The Board’s approach combines regulatory oversight, stakeholder partnerships, public education, and enforcement measures to tackle emerging threats. In recent months, the regulator has also warned consumers about illegal betting scams and fraudulent gambling applications promoted through social media platforms, messaging services, and unofficial download links.

The NWGB also advised consumers to only download gambling applications from recognized app stores, cautioning that software distributed through direct links may expose users to unlicensed operators, data security risks, and fraudulent schemes.

As the provincial gambling regulator, the North West Gambling Board is responsible for licensing operators, conducting compliance inspections, and taking enforcement action against regulatory violations. The Board also collaborates with the South African Police Service, the National Prosecuting Authority, municipalities, and other law enforcement agencies to combat illegal gambling activities.

Qalinge noted that technology could become a critical tool in detecting and responding to new forms of illegal gambling. At the national level, South Africa’s National Gambling Board is already exploring technological solutions to strengthen enforcement against unlawful online gambling operations.
