AFRIPLAYHUB EXECUTIVE SPOTLIGHT | MOKGASE GREGORY MAKOKO
Leadership, regulatory enforcement and community impact at the heart of Limpopo’s gaming industry.
This week, AfriPlayHub spotlights Mokgase Gregory Makoko, Chief Executive Officer of the Limpopo Gambling Board (LGB), South Africa, whose leadership comes at a pivotal time for the province’s regulated gambling industry.
From strengthening action against illegal gambling to protecting vulnerable communities and supporting sustainable economic development, the Board’s recent activities highlight the increasingly important role of provincial regulators in shaping a safer, more accountable gaming environment.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS AND KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
- R334 million in gambling levies: The Limpopo Gambling Board reported that levy collections increased from R260 million in FY2023/24 to R334 million in FY2024/25, reflecting the growing economic contribution of the regulated gambling sector.
- Action against illegal gambling: During FY2024/25, enforcement efforts included the seizure of 623 illegal gambling machines and the destruction of 666 machines. The Board has also worked with the South African Police Service (SAPS) on enforcement and court proceedings involving alleged illegal gambling activities.
- Community outreach and player protection: In July 2026, Makoko joined the Board’s Mandela Month visit to Khomotsong Care Centre for the Disabled. The initiative provided essential items, including wheelchairs, blankets and food, while also raising awareness about responsible gambling and the dangers of illegal gambling.
- Government and industry engagement: In June 2026, Makoko and representatives of licensed operators participated in Limpopo’s 2026/27 LEDET Budget Speech engagement, connecting the regulated gambling sector with the province’s wider economic development priorities.
- People-centred regulation: Makoko has advocated for a regulatory approach that balances innovation and industry growth with effective enforcement, responsible gambling, consumer protection and meaningful community benefits.
Why this leadership matters
The Limpopo Gambling Board’s work illustrates a critical challenge facing regulators across Africa: how to support a growing gaming industry while addressing illegal operations, protecting players and ensuring that economic benefits reach local communities.
For Makoko and the Board, the task extends beyond licensing and compliance. It also involves safeguarding the integrity of the regulated market, working with law enforcement, engaging industry stakeholders and keeping public interest central to regulatory decisions.
As online betting and other digital gambling activities continue to evolve, collaboration between regulators, operators, law enforcement and responsible gambling organisations will be essential to maintaining effective oversight.
At AfriPlayHub, we spotlight the leaders and institutions whose work contributes to the conversations shaping Africa’s gaming industry.
