NWGB Partners with and NPA to Strengthen Illegal Gambling Prosecutions
SOUTH AFRICA– The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has concluded its Back-to-Basics Workshop, bringing together law enforcement and prosecuting authorities to strengthen efforts against illegal gambling in South Africa’s North West Province.
The workshop convened officials from the NWGB, South African Police Service (SAPS), and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to improve their understanding of gambling legislation and the legal procedures required to investigate offences and secure successful prosecutions.
The training addressed emerging enforcement challenges linked to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including the growth of online gambling platforms and the use of counterfeit gambling licences. These developments underscore the need for stronger investigative capabilities and closer coordination among regulatory authorities, law enforcement agencies, and prosecutors.
Under the leadership of Acting Chief Executive Officer Boitumelo Qalinge, the NWGB reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal gambling, enforcing compliance with gambling legislation, and protecting the public.
The Board further highlighted the importance of protecting provincial revenue generated by the regulated gambling industry. It noted that effective enforcement and inter-agency cooperation are vital to promoting transparency, accountability, and a well-regulated gambling environment.
The initiative forms part of the NWGB’s broader efforts to improve the investigation and prosecution of illegal gambling cases, strengthen enforcement of gambling laws, and ensure that those responsible for unlawful operations are held accountable.
