South Africa Appoints New National Gambling Board After 12-Year Leadership Gap
SOUTH AFRICA- South Africa is moving to restore permanent leadership at the National Gambling Board (NGB) after Cabinet approved the appointment of a new Board, bringing an end to a 12-year period without a permanent statutory Board.
The appointments were approved following Cabinet’s meeting on September 23, 2026, subject to the completion of standard qualification and security checks.
Dr. Makgathatso Charlotte Chana Pilane-Majake has been appointed Chairperson, while Kganki Matabane will serve as Deputy Chairperson. Other appointed members include Chuma Fani, Zoleka Gloria Bula and Silochini Pillay.
The new Board also brings together representatives with expertise spanning government, law enforcement, economic regulation, public finance and social development. The appointments include Milton Ntwana of the South African Police Service, Niklasina Maria Kruger of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, Khayalethu Ntimbela of National Treasury and Sizakele Magangoe of the Department of Social Development.
The NGB has operated without a permanent statutory Board since 2014, following its placement under administration after a forensic investigation into allegations of maladministration and wasteful expenditure. Administrators and advisers subsequently oversaw the regulator for more than a decade.
The restoration of permanent leadership marks a significant governance development for South Africa’s gambling sector. The new Board is expected to strengthen corporate governance, accountability and regulatory oversight as the country’s gambling industry continues to evolve.
