Ghana’s National Lottery Authority Enforces October 1 Deadline to End Paper-Based Lottery Coupons
Ghana- lottery sector in Ghana is undergoing a mandatory digital transition. The National Lottery Authority (Ghana NLA) is enforcing an October 1 deadline. This deadline aims to eliminate manual paper coupons entirely. All Private Lotto Operators (PLOs), agents, and writers must comply.
The regulatory overhaul replaces physical handwritten tickets with new technology. Specifically, 5,000 Point of Sale (POS) terminals will handle this transition. These terminals automate ticket generation across the country. They also enable instant prize payouts for winners. Operators who fail to complete this transition face real consequences. Non-compliant parties risk immediate exclusion from the lottery market.
Deadline Extended After Stakeholder Consultations
The Ghana NLA originally set a different deadline for this transition. August 1, 2026 was the initial target for PLOs. However, the Authority later announced an important change. This happened on August 3 specifically.
Following consultations with industry stakeholders, the Authority extended this deadline. October 1 became the new target date instead. This extension gave operators, agents, and writers extra time. Specifically, they received two additional months to complete the digital move.
NLA Director-General Confirms Strict Enforcement
Ghana NLA director-general Mohammed Abdul-Salam addressed this transition directly. He spoke ahead of the original deadline with clear language. “No one should be seen using pen and paper,” he said. “We need to compel people to stake through the electronic equipment.”
Under the old manual system, the process worked quite differently. Lottery receivers physically wrote customers’ selected numbers on paper. They recorded these numbers on paper coupons by hand. However, the new automated system changes this completely. POS terminals now generate lottery tickets in real time. This happens automatically whenever a purchase gets made.
New System Already Delivers Results
This new system isn’t just theoretical anymore. It’s already being used successfully across Ghana. On September 17, the Ghana NLA recorded an important milestone. The Authority reported its first lottery win using this new technology. A new NLA-Fidelity POS terminal generated this winning ticket. Furthermore, the prize was paid out instantly to the winner.
This broader rollout involves 5,000 new POS terminals total. These terminals are being deployed across Ghana’s lottery network currently.
Non-Compliance Carries Serious Consequences
The Ghana NLA’s directive leaves no room for ambiguity. PLOs, agents, and writers who fail to comply face clear consequences. They simply will not be permitted to operate lottery services. This strict enforcement underscores the Authority’s commitment to full digitisation.
With the October 1 deadline now just days away, time is running short. PLOs, agents, and writers must act quickly. They need to complete their move from paper-based staking. Electronic lottery operations must replace the old manual system entirely.
