North West Gambling Board Calls for Closer Cooperation with SAPS and NPA to Combat Illegal Gambling

NWGB Joins SAPS and NPA for Training Session

SOUTH AFRICA- The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has joined forces with two key partners recently. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) took part as well. Together, they held a training and knowledge-sharing session. The goal was strengthening cooperation on criminal investigations and prosecutions.

This session brought together stakeholders from across the criminal justice system. Participants discussed investigative and legal issues relevant to specific case types. These included organised crime and technology-enabled criminal activity.

Session Covers Key Legal and Investigative Issues

The discussions covered several important technical topics. These included the 48-hour rule and the non-enrolment of matters. Participants also addressed investigation and seizure of evidence in cybercrime cases. Additionally, the group explored racketeering provisions used to combat organised criminal activity.

NWGB representative Simon Mogapi delivered a key presentation during the session. His presentation focused specifically on gambling-related crimes. He also addressed the broader impact of illegal gambling in North West province.

NWGB Highlights Risks of Illegal Gambling

Mogapi described illegal gambling as a serious criminal activity overall. He noted an important connection between unlicensed operations and broader crime. These operations can create real opportunities for money laundering. Organised crime also finds fertile ground within illegal gambling networks. Meanwhile, the public faces financial losses and other social harms from these activities.

He also raised concerns about consumer protection gaps. People using unlicensed gambling operations lose important safeguards. These protections normally apply to activities run by licensed operators. Without proper regulation, consumers have far less recourse when problems arise.

NWGB Calls for Stronger Institutional Cooperation

Mogapi referenced previous joint operations during his presentation. These efforts involved law enforcement and prosecutorial bodies working together. This reflects the NWGB’s ongoing response to illegal gambling across the province.

However, Mogapi pushed for even closer cooperation going forward. He specifically called on all three institutions to work more closely together. This cooperation should focus on identifying illegal gambling activities effectively. It should also support investigations into those involved in these operations. Ultimately, stronger prosecutions could help disrupt criminal operations more effectively.

NWGB Reaffirms Commitment to Coordinated Enforcement

The NWGB reiterated its broader commitment to this collaborative approach. It confirmed plans to keep working closely with law enforcement authorities. Prosecutorial bodies will also remain key partners going forward. According to the NWGB, a coordinated approach remains essential. This approach helps address illegal gambling effectively across North West province. It also promotes compliance with the province’s broader gambling regulatory framework.
