Uganda’s NLGRB Secures ISO 27001 Certification to Strengthen Cybersecurity, Data Protection

UGANDA– Uganda’s National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) has been awarded ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification, marking a significant step in its efforts to strengthen cybersecurity, protect sensitive information, and enhance regulatory oversight of the country’s growing digital gaming sector.

The internationally recognized certification confirms that the Board has implemented an Information Security Management System (ISMS) designed to identify, assess, and manage information security risks across its operations.

The certification applies to the NLGRB’s headquarters in Kampala, covering personnel, information assets, and supporting systems involved in the regulator’s day-to-day activities.

NLGRB Chief Executive Officer Denis Mudene Ngabirano described the certification as a major institutional achievement, noting that safeguarding confidential information is a critical responsibility for a regulator that handles data from licensed gambling operators and members of the public.

As Uganda’s gaming industry becomes increasingly digital, the regulator’s operations depend more heavily on secure information systems and effective data management. The NLGRB oversees casinos, sports betting, lotteries, and other gaming activities across the country.

The regulator noted that information security plays an increasingly important role in licensing, compliance monitoring, and regulatory supervision, particularly as online betting and digital gaming services continue to expand.

Ngabirano therefore encouraged both public and private sector organizations to view information security as a strategic priority, emphasizing that protecting sensitive data requires ongoing commitment rather than a one-time technology investment.

The achievement positions the NLGRB among Uganda’s early public institutions to adopt an internationally recognized information security standard and could serve as a model for other organizations seeking to strengthen their cybersecurity and governance frameworks.
