DRC National Lottery Operator SONAL Warns Bettors of Fraudulent Online Platforms Misusing Its Name and the Bet242 Brand

The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) National Lottery operator (SONAL) has issued an urgent warning. It cautioned bettors about fraudulent online platforms using its name illegally. SONAL shared this warning in an August 4 communiqué. The operator confirmed it had become the target of an attempted scam online. Fraudsters also targeted SONAL’s name across social media platforms.

As a result, SONAL urged bettors to exercise real caution. It specifically warned against transactions through platforms falsely claiming to represent SONAL.

Operator Denies Any Online Gambling Services

SONAL made its position clear in the strongest terms. “SONAL does not organise any online lottery games or betting services, and we accept no responsibility for transactions made through these fraudulent platforms,” the operator said. This statement directly addresses the growing confusion around unauthorised sites.

The operator also addressed a specific brand being misused. It urged bettors to stay alert regarding this issue. “Bet242 has not yet launched,” SONAL stressed clearly. No official launch date has been announced for this brand yet.

Bet242 Name Misused by Scammers

Interestingly, fraudulent platforms have already misused the Bet242 name. However, this brand carries real significance for SONAL’s future plans. Bet242 is expected to become SONAL’s official online betting service eventually. This launch will happen once the DRC completes its gambling sector reforms.

Warning Arrives Amid Major Sector Overhaul

This warning comes at a significant moment for DRC gambling regulation. The country is implementing a broader overhaul of its entire gambling sector. The Ministry of Finance now oversees a new national platform. This system handles regulation and supervision across multiple gambling categories. These include sports betting, casinos, lotteries, and prediction contests.

Operators faced a clear deadline earlier this year. They needed to submit identification information by July 31. Meanwhile, the system’s pilot phase is set to end on August 30. After this date, non-compliant operators could face serious consequences. These include administrative measures and financial penalties.

Centralised Oversight Aims to Curb Digital Risks

This new monitoring system reflects a bigger shift underway. The DRC is moving toward greater centralised oversight of gambling activity nationwide. SONAL’s warning highlights a real risk within this transition. Digital gambling carries particular dangers when unauthorised platforms exploit trusted brands. Established lottery and gambling names can easily attract unsuspecting bettors into scams.
