ISJ Cracks Down on Illegal Gambling in Angola with Major Enforcement Action

Angola’s gambling regulator, the Serviço de Investigação de Jogos (ISJ), has intensified its efforts to strengthen the country’s regulated gaming market following the destruction of 182 illegal gaming machines.

According to the ISJ, the move represents a decisive step in tackling unlawful gambling activities and reinforces the commitment of public authorities to uphold legality, maintain public order, and protect citizens.

The regulator warned that illegal gambling continues to undermine the formal economy and operates outside established regulatory frameworks. It noted that unlicensed operators fail to guarantee prize payouts, lack player protection measures, and expose participants to potential fraud. In addition, such operations evade tax obligations and increase the risk of underage gambling.

As part of its enforcement efforts, the ISJ urged the public to avoid engaging in illegal gambling and to patronise only licensed and regulated operators. It also called on citizens to report suspicious gambling activities, locations, or equipment through official channels, emphasising that public cooperation is key to combating illegal operations.

The action highlights Angola’s broader push to strengthen regulatory oversight and promote a safer, more transparent gambling environment.
