Malawi Sports Betting Licence Deadline Approaches as MAGLA Strengthens Operator Screening

Prospective sports betting operators have until 10 July 2026 to apply for a licence in Malawi, with the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) warning that late applications will not be accepted.

The licensing exercise, which opened on 8 June 2026, is being conducted under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 2022 and the Gaming and Lotteries (Sports Betting) Regulations, 2025. Both local and international operators are eligible to apply, while applications for land-based casino licences remain open until 15 July 2026 under a separate process.

MAGLA said all applicants will undergo a rigorous due diligence process, including assessments of financial integrity, beneficial ownership, regulatory compliance history, and overall operational suitability. The regulator said the vetting process is designed to ensure that only credible and financially sound operators are licensed.

According to MAGLA, applications will be evaluated in line with the Gaming and Lotteries Act, the Sports Betting Regulations, and the criteria outlined in the official Request for Proposals (RFP) to promote transparency, accountability, and responsible investment in the sector.

Applicants are also required to purchase the RFP documents. Local companies will pay a non-refundable fee of K2 million (approximately US$1,153), while foreign operators will pay about K2.6 million (approximately US$1,500).

Following the application deadline, MAGLA will review submissions to determine which operators meet the regulatory, financial, and governance standards required to receive sports betting licences, as Malawi continues efforts to build a transparent, well-regulated, and competitive gaming industry.
