Angola Tax Affairs Secretary Reaffirms Support for Gaming Regulator

ANGOLA– Angola’s Secretary of State for Tax Affairs, José Leiria, has reaffirmed his support for the country’s Gaming Supervision Institute (ISJ), underscoring the importance of maintaining a transparent and well-regulated gambling sector.

During a visit to the regulator on October 21, Leiria met with the institute’s leadership and staff, receiving updates on its operations, ongoing projects, and regulatory activities.

The secretary of state was welcomed by ISJ Director General Nerethz Tati and members of the Board of Directors. Accompanied by his office director, Bráulio Assis, Leiria toured the institute’s various departments and met with employees responsible for carrying out its regulatory functions.

The visit provided an opportunity for the government official to gain further insight into the ISJ’s work overseeing, supervising, and inspecting gaming activities across Angola.

According to the regulator, its mission is to promote a transparent and properly regulated gaming environment, with responsible gambling serving as a core institutional objective.

During his visit, Leiria praised the institute’s efforts and encouraged both management and staff to remain committed to strengthening regulatory oversight and ensuring compliance within the sector.

The visit comes as the ISJ continues to intensify its focus on anti-money laundering controls within the gambling industry. In 2025, the regulator classified nine gaming operators as high risk for money laundering, up from four companies in 2024. The assessment highlighted shortcomings in areas such as customer due diligence, transaction monitoring, and the reporting of suspicious activities.
