Eswatini PM Warns Against Gambling Probe Interference
Eswatini- Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has issued a clear warning. He called for police to pursue suspected illegal gambling operators freely. This comes after reports emerged of political attempts to obstruct law enforcement. Dlamini insisted that police must carry out their duties under the law without interference.
According to Dlamini, anyone involved in criminal activity should face arrest. He stressed that suspects must be brought before the courts properly. This applies regardless of their position or political connections.
PM Denies Knowledge of Interference Claims
Dlamini’s remarks followed serious allegations against politicians. Claims suggested that politicians had intervened in police efforts. These efforts targeted people linked to illegal gambling operations. However, Dlamini said he was not aware of any such case. No formal report had reached his office regarding this matter.
Police leadership echoed this position during recent statements. Officials confirmed they had not received any reports alleging interference. Specifically, no evidence suggested that Cabinet ministers prevented officers from doing their jobs.
Investigation Expands After Device Seizures
These allegations emerged following a major investigation expansion. Authorities dismantled an illegal gambling network earlier this year. During the operation, officers seized electronic devices from several locations. These devices reportedly revealed links to politicians and other officials. Immigration officials and various government appointees were also named in the evidence.
Crackdown Leads to Mass Arrests
The gambling crackdown has produced significant results so far. Police have arrested more than 150 foreign nationals during the operation. These individuals come from several countries, including China and Taiwan. Officers also arrested nationals from Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Suspects from Brazil, Cambodia, and India were arrested as well.
Some of these individuals have already faced consequences. Courts have convicted several suspects, who have since been deported. Meanwhile, others remain in custody as they await repatriation to their home countries.
Key Suspects Await Trial
An alleged ringleader currently sits in custody awaiting trial. Two other suspects face the same situation alongside him. In addition, authorities have charged three emaSwati nationals in connection with the case. Prosecutors allege these three hired foreign nationals to run illegal gambling businesses.
Looking ahead, all suspects are expected to face formal legal proceedings. Authorities say they will continue taking action against illegal gambling. This includes any operation conducted outside Eswatini’s established legal framework.
