National Lotteries Commission Gets New Leadership as South Africa Strengthens Oversight

The South African government has appointed King Tembinkosi Bonakele as Chairperson of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) Board and Mpho Sonia Mosing as a board member, strengthening the leadership of the country’s lottery regulator.

The appointments were made by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition following recommendations from Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition, which conducted a public recruitment and interview process in line with the Lotteries Act.

Bonakele, a lawyer and former Commissioner of the Competition Commission of South Africa, topped the selection process. He previously served on the NLC Board and brings extensive experience in competition law, corporate governance, public administration, and regulatory oversight.

As Board Chairperson, Bonakele will provide strategic leadership, oversee corporate governance, monitor the Commission’s performance, and guide its long-term direction.

Mosing joins the board with a strong background in governance, finance, and risk management. She previously chaired the Audit and Risk Committee of the State Diamond Trader and has served on several public sector boards, overseeing compliance and financial accountability.

The appointments come as the National Lotteries Commission continues efforts to strengthen governance, improve accountability, and rebuild public confidence following increased scrutiny over its grant administration and oversight processes. The new board is expected to reinforce compliance with the Lotteries Act while providing strategic direction for the regulator’s future operations.
