SARGF Raises Alarm Over Growing Gambling Related Harm in South Africa

SOUTH AFRICA: The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) has raised concerns over the growing impact of gambling-related harm in the country, warning that increasing financial losses, mounting debt and associated mental health challenges are pushing more individuals into severe distress.

The foundation, which promotes responsible gambling and provides support to individuals affected by gambling-related problems, has reported cases of people spending their entire salaries on betting, leaving them unable to cover essential living expenses or repay accumulated debts.

According to SARGF’s latest report, 1,345 people experiencing severe gambling-related distress had contemplated death as a result of their circumstances. Chief Executive Sibongile Simelane-Quntana said many individuals only seek assistance after their situations have become critical.

The report also highlights how the prospect of winning can reinforce harmful gambling behaviour. Some individuals become convinced that another significant win will resolve their financial difficulties, encouraging them to continue betting despite repeated losses.

Simelane-Quntana also identified a connection between excessive gambling, alcohol consumption and drug use, noting that some people turn to substances as a way of coping with the emotional distress associated with financial losses.

The issue has also attracted government attention. During his mid-year budget speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said the government was considering an additional tax on gambling conducted through mobile technology as part of broader efforts to address the country’s high levels of gambling activity. The proposed measure is intended to discourage mobile gambling by increasing its cost.

Meanwhile, SARGF and other support organisations continue to encourage individuals experiencing gambling-related difficulties, as well as their families, to seek assistance before the situation escalates.

People affected by gambling-related harm can contact the following organisations for support:

  • South African Responsible Gambling Foundation/National Responsible Gambling Programme: 0800 006 008. Support is available in multiple languages.
  • Gamblers Anonymous South Africa: 083 783 5717 (KwaZulu-Natal); 060 624 7140 (Gauteng).

The foundation’s report highlights the need for early intervention, accessible support services and stronger awareness of the financial, psychological and social consequences of harmful gambling behaviour.
