FROM AWARENESS TO ACTION: HOW AFRICA’S GAMING LEADERS ARE ADVANCING PLAYER PROTECTION AND SAFER PLAY

Today, regulators, operators and responsible gaming advocates across Africa are increasingly coming together to tackle some of the industry’s biggest challenges, including illegal gambling, consumer protection and responsible gaming. Through cross-border collaboration, safer gambling campaigns, educational initiatives and emerging technology solutions, stakeholders are building a stronger framework to promote safer play and protect consumers. The progress made in recent years demonstrates a growing commitment to ensuring that Africa’s gaming industry develops in a sustainable, transparent and responsible manner.

From continent-wide awareness campaigns such as Africa Safer Gambling Week and player education platforms like PlaySafe Africa’s PlayersHub, to innovative AI-powered compliance and monitoring solutions, the industry is steadily moving towards a more proactive approach to player protection. These initiatives reflect the collective efforts of gaming leaders who are helping shape a safer future for African gaming.

Empowering Players Through Education and Awareness

Traditionally, player protection measures have come into play only after a player seeks help, self-excludes, or experiences significant financial or personal difficulties. A similar reactive pattern can be seen in efforts to combat illegal gambling, where action is often taken only after harm has already occurred. Meanwhile, unlicensed operators continue to reach consumers through social media, messaging platforms and influencer marketing, making post-harm intervention increasingly challenging.

As online gambling becomes more accessible through smartphones, industry stakeholders are beginning to recognize that waiting until problems become visible may no longer be enough. The focus is gradually shifting toward prevention, education and early intervention.

A growing example of this proactive approach is PlaySafe Africa’s PlayersHub, a platform designed to equip players with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed gambling decisions. Rather than intervening only when harm has already occurred, the initiative promotes responsible gambling through educational resources that help players understand gaming risks, manage their finances, recognize warning signs of problematic behaviour and support their overall wellbeing. By placing education at the forefront, PlayersHub encourages safer gambling habits before issues escalate into serious harm.

This preventive model reflects the broader direction of responsible gambling efforts across Africa, where regulators, operators and industry bodies are increasingly exploring ways to empower consumers with information, support tools and practical guidance long before intervention becomes necessary.

Africa’s Safer Gambling Movement Gains Momentum

One of the strongest signs of change came with the launch of the first Africa Safer Gambling Week, organised by the African iGaming Alliance (AiA) in September 2026 under the #PlaySafeAfrica campaign. The initiative brought together stakeholders from Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Malawi to promote responsible gambling, player protection tools and awareness of the dangers posed by illegal operators.

The event highlighted a growing continental consensus that player protection should be embedded within the industry’s growth strategy rather than treated as an afterthought.

Can Artificial Intelligence Help?

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being viewed as a powerful tool for identifying risky gambling behaviour before serious harm occurs.

Responsible gaming advocates have argued that technology should be used to monitor behavioural indicators such as extended gambling sessions, increasing spending patterns and repeated attempts to recover losses. When these indicators emerge, operators can deploy responsible gambling messages, spending reminders or referrals to support services before the situation escalates.

Several African regulators are already exploring data-driven compliance tools, while discussions around AI-assisted player protection continue to gain momentum across the continent.

The growing focus on prevention is also creating opportunities for technology providers to support both operators and regulators. One example is Evidentia AI, an African-focused gaming intelligence platform that leverages artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to identify unusual transaction patterns, potential fraud risks and structuring attempts in real time across multiple operators. By transforming large volumes of player and transaction data into actionable insights, platforms such as Evidentia AI demonstrate how technology can move the industry beyond traditional compliance and toward more proactive risk management.

As Africa’s gaming ecosystem continues to evolve, industry stakeholders increasingly see AI not only as a compliance tool but also as a mechanism for strengthening player protection. The challenge now is ensuring that these solutions are implemented responsibly, with appropriate safeguards around privacy, transparency and fairness.

A Collective Commitment to Safer Play

Africa’s gaming industry has made significant strides in strengthening player protection through collaboration, education and innovation. Initiatives such as PlaySafe Africa’s PlayersHub, Africa Safer Gambling Week, workplace awareness programmes and emerging AI-powered solutions demonstrate a growing commitment to responsible gaming across the continent. As regulators, operators, advocacy groups and technology providers continue to work together, the focus is increasingly shifting towards empowering players, promoting safer play and building a sustainable gaming ecosystem where player wellbeing remains a shared priority.
