Ghana Lottery Authority Proposes Performance-Based Support for Lotto Firms

GHANA- Ghana’s National Lottery Authority (NLA) is considering a new performance-based support and reward system for Lotto Marketing Companies (LMCs), with firms to be classified according to their sales performance.

Under the proposed framework, LMCs would be grouped into high-, medium- and low-performing categories, based on their respective sales results. NLA Director General Mohammed Abdul-Salam said the categorisation would enable the Authority to develop a more structured approach to supporting and rewarding companies.

The proposal was discussed during a September 2 meeting between Abdul-Salam and executives of the Association of Lotto Marketing Companies, where participants also examined how LMCs could effectively access the Stabilisation Fund.

According to the NLA, the proposed classification would help management determine how support and rewards should be allocated based on each company’s performance.

The discussions build on earlier engagements between the NLA and LMCs concerning the Stabilisation Fund, expansion of point-of-sale (POS) infrastructure, and the growing use of USSD and web-based lottery platforms.

The NLA has previously noted that it had not procured new terminals for about 10 years, while ageing and unreliable machines had affected sales performance.

However, the Authority has yet to announce the specific criteria for the three performance categories or explain how financial support and rewards will be distributed. The latest discussions nevertheless signal a broader push to improve LMC performance while modernising Ghana’s lottery operations.
