Eswatini Gambling Probe Earns INTERPOL Recognition After Global Arrests
Eswatini’s efforts to dismantle an alleged illegal online gambling network have earned international recognition, after intelligence gathered during the investigation contributed to arrests in multiple countries under INTERPOL’s Operation First Light 2026.
According to INTERPOL, the global operation carried out between January and April across 97 countries resulted in thousands of arrests, major asset seizures, and the identification of victims linked to cyber-enabled financial crimes.
National Commissioner of Police Vusi Manoma Masango said the recognition reflects a collaborative effort involving local law enforcement, government agencies, and international partners, rather than the Royal Eswatini Police Service alone.
INTERPOL Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza commended Eswatini’s role during a recent international meeting, noting that intelligence gathered by local investigators helped trigger further arrests abroad. Cambodia was among the countries where around 200 suspects linked to the wider network were detained.
Authorities in Eswatini reported that the operation led to the arrest of 82 suspects and the seizure of electronic devices, foreign currency, and equipment allegedly used in illegal gambling, money laundering, and impersonation scams.
Investigators have also identified victims outside Eswatini, highlighting the cross-border reach of the syndicate. Ongoing analysis of digital evidence is expected to uncover additional links and determine the full scope of the operation.
Masango emphasised that the case underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling illegal online gambling, financial fraud, and other forms of transnational organised crime.
