LONACI Strengthens Responsible Gambling as It Prepares for WLA Level 4 Certification

LONACI has intensified its nationwide player protection efforts as it prepares to achieve the World Lottery Association’s (WLA) highest responsible gaming certification, Level 4.

The initiative follows LONACI’s milestone in February, when it became the first lottery operator in sub-Saharan Africa to secure the WLA Level 3 Responsible Gaming certification. Building on that progress, the operator is now working towards Level 4, further strengthening its commitment to responsible gambling and consumer protection.

As part of this push, LONACI has launched a nationwide awareness campaign designed to educate players, retailers, and stakeholders on responsible gambling practices. After completing its first phase in the Abidjan District, the campaign delivered through a travelling awareness caravan is being extended to cities across the country over a three-week period.

The programme was led by Dramane Coulibaly, director general of LONACI and president of the African Lotteries Association, alongside teams from sales, marketing, communications, human resources, and responsible gaming units.

During the initial phase, outreach activities were carried out in key municipalities including Plateau, Marcory, Abobo, Yopougon, and Cocody. These sessions focused on educating participants about the risks of excessive gambling, encouraging players to treat betting as entertainment rather than a source of income, and reinforcing measures to protect minors.

Retailers and vendors were also encouraged to strengthen compliance by preventing underage gambling and guiding individuals displaying signs of harmful behaviour towards available support services.

LONACI stated that the initiative reflects its broader commitment to international best practices, emphasising that responsible gambling goes beyond regulatory compliance and represents a social responsibility to protect players and promote a more ethical gaming environment.

The nationwide rollout forms part of LONACI’s long-term strategy to build a safer, more sustainable lottery sector while aligning with global responsible gaming standards.
