Women Lead Football Betting Participation in Kenya and South Africa, GeoPoll Survey Finds
Women account for the majority of football bettors in Kenya and South Africa, according to GeoPoll’s 2026 Football Survey, which examined football engagement, media consumption, and betting behaviour across five African markets.
The survey found that 62 per cent of female football fans in Kenya participate in sports betting, the highest rate among the countries surveyed. South Africa followed closely at 59 per cent, while participation among female football fans stood at 43 per cent in Nigeria, 39 per cent in Ghana, and 27 per cent in Mozambique.
GeoPoll noted that the figures reflect betting activity among female football supporters rather than the broader female population.
The survey also highlighted football’s enduring popularity across Africa, with fan engagement ranging from 91 to 96 per cent among respondents in Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and Mozambique.
The findings underscore football’s continued influence as a major driver of audience engagement and betting activity across the continent, while also pointing to the growing participation of women in sports betting markets traditionally perceived as male-dominated.
