Uganda Cracks Down on Betting Firms with 30% Tax as June 30 Deadline Sparks Panic

Uganda’s betting companies and casino operators have been given until June 30 to clear any outstanding gaming tax obligations, with the incentive of a complete waiver on accrued interest and penalties. The deadline comes just ahead of the introduction of new gambling tax measures set to take effect on July 1.

Under the upcoming changes, a unified 30 percent gaming tax will be implemented, alongside a 15 percent withholding tax on betting and gaming winnings. These reforms mark a significant shift in the country’s approach to gambling taxation.

The deadline aligns with a tax relief initiative introduced by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), which allows taxpayers to settle outstanding principal domestic tax liabilities accumulated up to June 30, 2024. Those who meet the requirements will benefit from a full waiver of any interest and penalties tied to those debts.

Gaming taxes are included in the programme, making it especially relevant for licensed betting firms, casinos, and other operators within the gambling sector aiming to regularise their tax records before the new regime comes into force.

According to the URA, businesses that fully pay off their qualifying principal tax liabilities by June 30, 2026, will receive a 100 percent waiver on related interest and penalties. Partial payments may still qualify for proportional relief, depending on the amount settled. The process is automatic, meaning eligible taxpayers do not need to submit a separate application.

URA Commissioner General John Rujoki Musinguzi noted that the initiative provides a valuable opportunity for businesses to clear outstanding debts without the additional burden of penalties. He emphasised that the government is encouraging taxpayers with arrears to take advantage of the programme before the deadline.

In recent weeks, the authority has intensified awareness efforts, stressing that the June 30 deadline will not be extended. Through its public messaging, the URA has made it clear that there will be no grace period beyond this date, reinforcing that this is the final opportunity for eligible taxpayers to benefit from the waiver.

Final Countdown: Uganda’s Gambling Tax Overhaul Leaves Operators With No Room for Error

Uganda’s gambling operators are now in a high-stakes race against time as a sweeping tax overhaul edges closer to reality.

The June 30 deadline is more than just a cut-off it marks the final window for businesses to clear outstanding gaming tax arrears before a tougher regime takes hold. The waiver expires just one day before new laws under the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill 2026 and the Lotteries and Gaming (Amendment) Bill 2026 come into effect.

From July 1, the rules change dramatically. A 30% tax on betting and gaming calculated on total stakes minus payouts will redefine operator margins, alongside a 15% withholding tax on player winnings.

Guidance from PricewaterhouseCoopers highlights that the withholding tax applies to

net winnings after deducting stakes, although payouts from licensed national lottery operators remain exempt a detail that could shape player behavior and operator strategy.

Tax experts, including Crowe Uganda, are warning businesses to urgently reassess compliance systems and reporting structures before the deadline hits.

For operators already carrying tax debt, the pressure is even greater. Missing the June 30 deadline means forfeiting penalty waivers and entering the new regime weighed down by accumulated interest and liabilities.

What’s emerging is not just a policy shift but a stress test for Uganda’s entire gambling ecosystem.
