Gaming Platforms Hit by Rising Fraud Threat as Cybercriminals Target Player Accounts
Video gaming platforms in Kenya are facing a growing fraud problem, with 9.1% of attempted transactions flagged as suspicious in 2025, according to a new TransUnion report.
The report reveals that fraudsters are increasingly targeting account creation, where 4.5% of new registrations were flagged as potentially fraudulent—far higher than login attempts (2.2%) and financial transactions (0.9%).
Account takeover attacks led reported fraud cases at 27%, followed by identity theft (26%), social engineering scams (25%), and phishing attacks (24%).
While betting platforms recorded the highest fraud rate overall at 15.6%, the findings highlight mounting security risks for gaming companies as cybercriminals focus on stealing identities and compromising player accounts.
Despite Kenya’s digital fraud rate remaining below the global average, victims reported the highest median financial losses in Africa, averaging US$838 per scam incident.
